For close to a century, ASCAP has been a leader in advocacy and grassroots efforts focused on protecting the rights of music creators. We had a great response to last year’s video initiative, designed to inform and educate key Washington policy makers and legislators about the issues that affect the music community. As a follow up, we are once more looking to capture testimonials from ASCAP members and fellow music creators at this year’s EXPO. If you would like to have your voice heard by your respective Members of Congress and others, please stop by the Elysian Park Room on the 3rd floor to take part in a brief video interview and articulate what being a music creator means to you!

SoundExchange: What It Is, Why It Pays, and How to Get Your Share

SoundExchange will explain how registering (for free!) with them can earn you royalties for plays on satellite radio, Internet radio, cable TV music channels and other services that stream sound recordings. SoundExchange is a non-profit, and an important source of revenue for all artists (big and small) and labels (indie and major): they've distributed over $1.3 billion to artists and labels so far. But thousands of artists and labels don't know they need to register, and millions in royalties haven't yet been claimed. Interactive and question-driven, this workshop will also cover need-to-know info on copyright, licensing, metadata and legislation that will affect your career.

Oh, the Horror: Master Session with James S. Levine

ASCAP composer James S. Levine has given musical life to plastic surgeons (Nip/Tuck) and singing high schoolers (Glee), police detectives (Rizzoli & Isles) and ruthless lawyers (Damages). He’s used to dealing with characters with dark secrets, but he’s never had a scoring assignment quite as terrifying as American Horror Story, the acclaimed FX horror-drama heading into its third season this fall. Levine will dive deep into his evolution and creative process, with an emphasis on how he uses music to inspire dread in the hearts of television audiences.

Wide Awake: “I Create Music” Interview with Katy Perry

The world fell in love with Katy Perry in 2008, the year she released the multi-platinum One of the Boys, and topped the charts with its first single “I Kissed a Girl." She has since set sales and chart records with her album, Teenage Dream, earning dozens of industry accolades including Billboard’s Woman of the Year. While Katy has blossomed into one of today’s biggest and boldest pop stars, her success has been hard-won. In the ten years leading up to her major label debut on Capitol, Katy was signed to three record labels, yet remained true to her artistic vision throughout the process. Katy Perry is no manufactured pop princess - she wrote or co-wrote her songs every step of the way, including the record-breaking six #1 singles from Teenage Dream. Katy’s story is one of both talent and perseverance, and she’ll share the ups and downs of the journey in this keynote interview.

Take a Bow: Master Session with Ne-Yo & Stargate

Through ingenious combinations of pop, hip-hop and R&B, the Grammy-winning songwriting-production team Stargate, composed of Norwegians Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Hermansen, has crafted massive hits for some of today’s biggest artists. Stargate is a constant fixture on the charts, responsible for a wide range of unstoppable songs including Katy Perry's “Firework,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” and Rihanna's “Only Girl (in the World),” “S&M,” “What’s My Name” and “Diamonds” as well as songs for Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Ne-Yo, Lionel Richie and Shakira. Both Tor and Mikkel are experienced instrumentalists, and the solid musical core they bring to every production is the key to the durability of their music. In addition to their killer beats and great melodies, Stargate’s skills shine brightest in their ability to collaborate with other gifted artists, such as Ne-Yo, with whom they have created some powerful songs, including Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)” and Rihanna dance-pop hit “Take a Bow.” Ne-Yo, who has risen to become one of modern music’s most talented and prolific artists. is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, composer and producer, and in less than five years, he’s produced three #1 albums featuring such popular hits as “So Sick,” “Sexy Love,” “Miss Independent,” “Closer” and more, sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and collaborated with everyone from Michael Jackson to Tim McGraw. His fifth album, R.E.D., was released last fall. In this very special session, Mikkel, Tor and Ne-Yo will provide a valuable look into the art of collaboration, the creative process and how they’ve created some of today’s most popular music.

Murphy’s Laws of Songwriting

So you're an artist-songwriter, writer-producer or just a songwriter looking for that next cut. Why would the industry want YOUR song to drive its dreams, become a hit, convince someone to spend $100,000 on production and millions on promotion? Why should the listener want to own YOUR song? What do all hits have in common? What sets them apart? By looking at what every recent  #1 record has in common, you can see the same trends that determine what guides every "hit" writer, producer and artist. ASCAP’s Ralph Murphy demystifies the process and arms you for success. His “Murphy's Laws of Songwriting” are used by successful writers worldwide and give you the tools to take songs from good to great. After this seminar, your songs will be ready to take on the world!

A Good Understanding: Master Session with Nico Muhly (Presented by Variety)

Nico Muhly has been universally hailed as one of the most consistently inventive composers of his generation. While he has demonstrated a unique voice and a staggering range of interests in classical music idioms - from symphonic to chamber works, choral music and ballet to a full-length opera (Two Boys) - he is just as well-respected for dissolving the boundaries between concert music and popular culture. Muhly has lent his talents as performer, arranger and conductor to Antony and the Johnsons, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Björk, Doveman, Grizzly Bear, Jónsi of Sigur Rós Usher and fun. ; he’s also written acclaimed scores to The Reader and the forthcoming Kill Your Darlings, a biopic about the American Beat poets. In this illuminating master session, Muhly and Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas will show clips from the movie and discuss how they approached setting the Beats to music. Muhly will also discuss how he carves out his own space in the music world, and what drives his boundless creativity.

Website Demolition Derby (Presented by Bandzoogle)

This session will offer live critiques of EXPO attendees' websites. Our panelists will assess each site's design, organization, content and functionality. How does the website fit with the artist's overall online strategy, and how successfully does it achieve the artist's goals? Our experts have worked with thousands of songwriters and musicians, from major label superstars to secluded basement composers. They are extremely knowledgeable about website best practices and deeply allergic to bad design, music that auto-starts, Flash widgets and unreadable fonts. Our panelists have been instructed to be ruthless and leave all diplomacy aside, so if you're courageous enough to submit your website for their scrutiny, send a note to Bandzoogle's Dave Cool: dcool@bandzoogle.com.

ASCAP composer Nathan Johnson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have worked on many of the same projects over the years, including the acclaimed indie film Brick, the Morgan M. Morgansen short films and the 2012 time travel thriller Looper. But they’ve never collaborated so closely as they did on the upcoming Don Jon, Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut. Johnson’s scores often involve found sounds and non-traditional recording techniques, and you can hear his passion for visual art in his music. Gordon-Levitt is just as multi-faceted - he’s already a successful actor, and proven his musical chops with his innovative hitRECord production company. With Don Jon, he shows that he’s also a brilliant writer and director.
